Mr. James W. Smith, Jr., Associate Professor of music joined the Troy University faculty in the summer of 1988. Mr. Smith is Associate Director of the Symphony Band, Director of Music Graduate Studies, Instrumental Music Coordinator, Instrumental Content Area Specialist, Music Department Teacher Certification Officer, past Chairman of the Graduate Council, and has served as Executive Director of the Southeastern United States Concert Band Clinic. His undergraduate teaching responsibilities include: applied trombone, band techniques, and conducting. Mr. Smith received his Bachelor of Music Education degree from Troy State University, his Master of Science degree from Jacksonville State University, and his Education Specialist degree from Troy State University. As a Troy State University undergraduate student, James Smith was featured trombone soloist with the "Sound of the South" Marching Band and Symphony Band, Band President, Student Conductor, and Section Leader.
James Smith brings thirty-three years teaching experience to Troy University. He has taught at Radium Springs Junior High School, Albany, Georgia; Slocomb High School, Slocomb, Alabama; Mosley High School, Panama City, Florida; Gulf Coast Community College, Panama City, Florida; Troy State University, Troy, Alabama and Troy University, Troy, Alabama.
Mr. Smith's conducting career has been extensive and varied. James Smith has studied conducting and score analysis with American Bandmasters Association Hall of Fame members Dr. John M. Long, Director of Bands, Troy State University, Dr. Harry Begian, Band Director Emeritus, University of Illinois, and Dr. William R. Revelli, Band Director Emeritus, University of Michigan. In addition to his public school, college, and university concert, marching, and jazz bands, he has conducted honor and community bands in Alabama, Georgia, and Florida. Mr. Smith has served as conductor of the Gulf Coast Symphony Orchestra and Panama City's First Baptist Church Orchestra. He has conducted many musical theater productions including My Fair Lady, The Wizard of OZ, The King and I, The Music Man, Damn Yankees, Mame, Brigadoon, and Fiddler On The Roof.
James Smith is a state bandmasters approved concert, marching, jazz, and solo and ensemble judge in Alabama, Georgia, and Florida and participates in this capacity annually. As a professional free lance musician, Mr. Smith has performed with Frankie Valli, Mary Ann Mobley, Gary Collins, Bob Hope, and Robert Nagel's Master Brass. He has also performed with the Ice Show, Circus, Rodeo, and the Ebony Fashion Tour. Mr. Smith has written articles and presented conferences for the Southern Baptist Convention on instrumental leadership, recruiting, retention, and orchestration and arranging.
James Smith's present and past associations include the Music Educators National Conference, the Alabama Music Educators Association, the Alabama Bandmasters Association, the Georgia Music Educators Association, the Georgia Bandmasters Association, the Florida Music Educators Association, the Florida Bandmasters Association, the Florida Orchestra Association, Phi Mu Alpha, Kappa Kappa Psi, Tau Beta Sigma, College Band Directors National Association, International Trombone Association, and has served as District Chairman and Executive Board Member of the Florida Bandmasters Association, Rotary International Fellowship Committee, and Executive Board Member of the "Sound of the South" Alumni Band.
James Smith is a member of Troy First Baptist Church. He is married to Linda and they have two grown children, Jim and Brian.
