Dr. Timothy Phillips is Assistant Professor of Clarinet at the John M. Long School of Music at Troy University. In addition to teaching applied clarinet, he teaches Music History, Class Woodwinds, and conducts the Clarinet Choir. He completed the Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music degrees in clarinet performance at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He earned the Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder. His principal teachers include: J. David Harris, Daniel Silver, Bil Jackson, and Philip Aaholm.

He has performed as soloist with the Troy University Symphony Band, the University of Illinois Symphonic Band, and the University of Illinois Summer Band. Additionally, he has performed with the Sinfonia da Camera on the campus of the University of Illinois. He can be heard on the Sinfonia da Camera’s Albany Records recording of George Enescu’s opera, Oedipe. He has performed with various orchestras in Colorado, Illinois, Alabama, and Florida. He also performs in the Wiregrass Trio with flutist Carol Franks and oboist Caterina Bristol.

In 2004, he presented his paper “The Longing Voice: Schubert’s Der Hirt auf dem Felsen” at the International Clarinet Association’s ClarinetFest in College Park, Maryland. In 2006 and 2007, he participated in two consortiums to commission works from Canadian-born composer, Bill Douglas. An active proponent of new music, Phillips has premiered works by Carl Vollrath and Don Bowyer.

Dr. Timothy Phillips received the Albert Austin Harding Award from the University of Illinois Bands. He is also a member of the International Clarinet Association, the Clarinet and Saxophone Society of Great Britain, Phi Kappa Phi Academic Honor Society, Phi Kappa Lambda Music Honor Society, the Music Educators National Association, and the College Band Directors National Association.

He is married to clarinetist Katrina Phillips. They live in Troy, Alabama with their cat, Benny.
