Gwen J. Threadgill

John M. Long School of Music
Smith Hall
Troy University
Troy, AL 36082
(334) 670-3500
Gwen has been on the music faculty since August of 2000. She is teaching class and private piano, aural skills, elementary music methods, and supervising interns. Gwen is the chairman of our local chapter of the National Guild of Pianists, President of the Troy Music Teacher’s Assoc., a member of MENC, ORFF, AMEA, MU PHI EPSILON, treasurer of our newly founded Troy University Choral Alumni Assoc., and co-founder/director of the TROY UNIVERSITY SUMMER PIANO CAMP. Gwen’s book, The Class Piano Solution, is the piano textbook for Troy University’s School of Music. . Celebrating twenty years, the annual monster piano duet program with ten pianos entitled “Christmas in Troy” is held at The University each December. Gwen is a certified Kindermusik® instructor also teaching children’s choirs, hand bells, a large studio of private piano students, and is substitute organist at First Baptist Church of Troy after serving many years as full-time organist there.
Gwen is from the “Land of Ahhhh’s”, Hutchinson, Kansas—the hometown of the Sky Rider’s Drum and Bugle Corps. Mrs. Threadgill has experience in all areas of music education--bands and choirs--public and private schools—elementary and secondary levels in Alabama and Kansas. Music groups consistently receiving superior ratings under her direction include high school madrigals/show choir, guitar ensemble, and numerous vocal and instrumental solos/ensembles along with her private piano studio both in Alabama and Kansas.
However, the highest honor comes from the number of students she has had the privilege of teaching who have chosen music as a career. Two of those students are listed on the John M. Long School of Music Outstanding Graduating Senior Plaque Another is the twirling instructor for the Sound of the South. Several are professional composers and musicians! And most are band and/or choir directors!
Ms. Gwen, as her students know her, received her BME degree from the College of Emporia, Kansas on a full four-year scholarship majoring in Pipe Organ/Trumpet. Dr. Paula Melton was her principal keyboard instructor. Trumpet instruction was under Dr. Paul Heigle, Dr. Marion Plummer, Buddy Morrow, Doc Severinson, and Clark Terry— jazz trumpeters. Frank Salisbury’s large work, the world premiere jazz setting of The Beatitudes with special guest artist’s, Clark Terry and Stan Kenton, was a gem in Gwen’s college career. Playing for Sunday morning services in Washington Cathedral, Wash., D.C. was also an awesome experience. Gwen’s graduate degree is from Troy State University with organ and piano studies under Dr. William Denison. Research under Dr. Denison includes a perpetual catalogue of published organ works based on hymn-tunes which has proven a most useful tool for organists.
Gwen is married to her best friend, Gene Threadgill, local artist, master carpenter, and TSU alumni with a BS in art and business. Living in the country with their daughters Rachel and Regan; their two dogs, Jake and Y0-Y0; and Cuddles, their tabby cat allows room for fishing and gardening.
